The Getzville Explorer Post 111, founded in 2000 under the direction of Past Chief Steve Herberger, provides teenagers ages 14 - 18 to experience and learn basic firefighting and EMS skills. It allows them to gain insight on the volunteer fire service and acquire skills that can last a lifetime.

These young men and women work alongside the active company to train and prepare for whatever a call my entail. They meet weekly to learn and practice their skills which include, but are not limited to: basic EMS, hydrant proficiency, SCBA mask confidence, and overall scene support firefighting operations. They also attend the annual "Explorer Weekend" at the New York State Fire Academy, in Montour Falls N.Y. The Explorer Post has also adopted a section of the Ellicott Creek Bike Path, where they collect litter and beautify the area on a biannual basis. They strive to make the community they live in a better place for all.

If anyone you know is interested in joining the Getzville Explorer Post 111, call 688-0117 or send an email to Steve Herberger (sherberger@getzvillefire.com) to learn more. Applicants must be between the ages of 14 - 18 and must also live within the Getzville Fire District.

"Why I'm an Explorer"

"I've lived next door to the fire hall my whole life and I always dreamed of becoming a volunteer firefighter. When I was 14, I joined the Explorer Post and it was the best decision of my life. I've always had a passion for helping others and this is the best way to do such a thing. I love going to the fire hall and hanging out with the people there, who have over time become my second family."

Aaron Dinderski

"Being in the post is a great way to see what goes on in a fire company and how to respond when there is an emergency. Once you become involved with the fire company, you will want to stay in because you know that your doing the right thing by helping people you don't even know, and the fact that your potentially saving someone's life. Once you are with the company you will learn not to leave a "brother" in trouble and also learn that we band together from beginning to end."

Brad Marshall

"I joined the explorer post seven months ago and it will forever be something that I remember and value. At the fire company you are surrounded by great people who will never send you in the wrong direction. It is a place where friendships are formed while learning leadership, the true meaning of teamwork, and many other important life lessons."
